Autumn camping and exploring Kányavári Island

Nature is in no rush, especially not toward gray, gloomy weekdays. In September, campers in Zalakaros are usually greeted by bright blue skies, sunshine, and a summery atmosphere. The low season is ideal for nature lovers: in pleasant weather, it feels great to get out and relax outdoors. From Thermal Camping, you can set off on special excursions, as the surrounding area is full of things to explore. One of our favourite autumn activities, for example, is the Kányavári canoe tour.

Explore the life of marsh dwellers and Uncle Matula, discover what the reeds have to whisper, and unwind in the heart of nature! Whether you are a beginner or an professional, travelling with children or with your pet, a visit to Kányavári Island and its diverse aquatic world will be a huge adventure. On the organised canoe tours, you can experience up close the peace of the reeds and the water world.

Thermal Camping will be your comfortable base for explorations, and at favourable low season rates. Enjoy active pastimes, water excursions, and at the end of the day, relax in the shade of the large green trees. On top of that, the Zalakaros Spa is just next door, where you can unwind your tired muscles in warm thermal waters.

All through September, every day awaits: Autumn canoeing adventures in the tranquil Berek – a guided canoe tour.

Paddling on the Kis-Balaton brings Hungarian childhood reading memories to life. The landscape evokes the atmosphere of the Fekete István novels familiar to many people. As you set off in the canoe, everything slows down. The city noise fades away, and you can hear the birds singing, the frogs croaking, and the gentle rustle of the reeds. With experienced guides by your side, it’s a real treat to peek into this untouched world. During the trip, they will be happy to answer all your questions and provide you with lots of interesting information.

The area around Kányavári Island is the perfect place for a leisurely canoe tour, even if you’ve never done one before.

How to get started on a canoe tour

  • How long is the Kányavári canoe tour? The Kányavári canoe tour is a relaxed-paced paddle lasting 2–3 hours. Don’t feel fit enough? Don’t worry, it can be done with normal physical fitness.
  • When do the canoe tours start and how can you book a spot? In September, guided canoe tours depart Monday to Saturday at 10:00 and 16:30, and on Sundays at 10:00. You can book your tour here. You can book a canoe tour online or by calling +36 30 953 0374. For safety reasons, paddling is cancelled in storms, but cloudy weather is no obstacle. The beauty of nature is visible even on overcast days. If the tour you selected cannot take place, you can book a new time or receive a refund.
  • What will you need? It’s worth bringing some snacks and drinks. You can take sandwiches, energy bars, pre-portioned fruit, and a water bottle. Don’t pack too much, but for your comfort, it’s a good idea to have a waterproof bag, a small pillow, a seat pad, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and clothing suitable for the weather.
  • What equipment do the tour organisers provide? They provide a canoe, paddle, life jacket, and, if needed, a waterproof storage box. To be well-prepared, place your mobile phone, wallet, and car keys in a waterproof, sealable bag. Bring only a small, practical backpack to carry the essentials.
  • Can children join the tour? Yes, those under 18 can participate; they need a youth ticket, while children aged 2–4 do not require a ticket. Make sure the little ones always wear a properly fastened life jacket.

Walking on Kányavári Island

The island is also worth exploring on foot: take a walk around it. A short walk after paddling is worth the effort, as it allows you to experience the area’s beauty from different perspectives. Kányavári Island is easily accessible via the pedestrian bridge. A nature trail runs through the area, and you’ll find a multi-level observation tower offering views of the Kis-Balaton wildlife: herons, egrets, ducks, and other water birds often appear on the horizon. For the little ones, a fantastic playground awaits.

  • Great Crested Grebe Nature Trail: 2 km route with 15 stations.
  • Lookout: magnificent panorama of the water and the surrounding landscape.
  • The iconic bridge: the three semicircular wooden bridges are a super photo opportunity.
